- Reinhart Attorney Hansen 2010 Leader in the Law Honoree
MILWAUKEE – Scott W. Hansen, chair of the Litigation Practice at Reinhart Boerner Van Deuren s.c., has been named as one of the Wisconsin Law Journal's 2010 Leaders in the Law honorees.
The Leaders in the Law program recognizes leading practitioners and judges throughout Wisconsin based on a wide variety of achievement criteria, including outstanding leadership, vision, and legal expertise.
Hansen chairs Reinhart's Litigation Practice and is a member of the firm's Commercial and Competition Law Group. His work generally involves complex disputes between businesses or between businesses and governments in which a client's serious interests or ability to survive may be at risk. Most recently, for example, Hansen won summary judgment dismissing a demand that a client pay for environmental remediation and other damages that are estimated to reach well over $1 billion. He also successfully defended Milwaukee County against a $200 million damage claim that arose from what came to be known as the Milwaukee County Pension Scandal.
His clients are mainly large and mid-sized businesses across the manufacturing and service sectors, as well as governments. He has written and taught seminars about persuasion in complex litigation, the benefits of mock juries in franchise and distribution litigation, using financial experts in federal court, antitrust law, business torts, the Wisconsin Fair Dealership Law, federal and state civil procedure and other topics.
In addition to his work at Reinhart, Hansen is active in the legal community. He is a member of the State Bar of Wisconsin (Litigation and Business Law Sections), the Wisconsin Academy of Trial Lawyers and the American Bar Association (Litigation, Antitrust and Franchise Sections). He is a member of the University of Wisconsin Law School Board of Visitors and has been elected a Fellow of the Wisconsin Law Foundation, to membership in the American Law Institute and to the Board of the American Constitution Society - Milwaukee Lawyers' Chapter. Previously, he served as an alderman and president of the Mequon Common Council, the Mequon Planning Commission and as a member of the Milwaukee County Bench - Bar Committee.
Hansen received his undergraduate degree from The University of Wisconsin and his law degree from the University of Wisconsin Law School, where he was a member of the Wisconsin Law Review and taught legal writing.
A lunch event honoring the Leaders in the Law will be held Feb. 26, at the Italian Community Center and the honorees will also be profiled in a special Wisconsin Law Journal magazine to be published in February.
