Records Retention for Health Care Providers
All organizations are burdened by the need to create and retain records. This is especially true for health care providers and facilities. Unfortunately, a number of our clients have commented that it has been difficult for them to locate a resource setting forth records retention requirements specifically applicable to health care providers and facilities.
Therefore, we created this manual to provide health care providers and facilities with a general guide to records retention requirements based on current legal requirements. We have sought to identify those records that health care providers and facilities, as well as businesses and employers, are required to retain and the minimum retention periods for such records. When a particular kind of record falls within the purview of more than one statute, regulation or agency, we have used the outside limit governing retention of that type of record.
Please note, however, that unique circumstances can alter the general record retention requirements described in this manual. If you are dealing with a situation which is outside the general norms, consult your legal counsel before disposing of records or other documents.
